Now I’m going to make no excuses at all for the less-than-perfect condition of some of the Newton Wilson machines in my collection.
I’ve always had a total fascination with the guy, a real character, who built a sewing machine empire and lost it after a series of disastrous lawsuits with the Singer Company.
And, of course, Newton Wilson was the man who made the Patent Office discovery that proved Elias Howe did not invent the sewing machine.
This is a highly important machine, being the second model of Newton Wilson’s successful Princess of Wales range.
This model has survived pretty well – it must date from early 1870s. Still has some gold leaf.
