This Grover and Baker portable carries the serial number of 1609 giving a date, according to the Grace Rogers Cooper book, of 1852. That doesn't tie up with the latest patent date of 1956 on what is clearly the original stitch plate slider.
So take your choice 1852 or 1856. Either way we are talking a machine from the first decade of the sewing-machine-industry.
And check out the amazing condition of what the Smithsonian calls the first-ever portable machine.
But perhaps the biggest plus here is the amazing original set of accessories that live in the drawer built into the box.
