Believe it or not, when this machine was discovered in Brimfield market in the 1980s, it was covered in red paint.
I took the chance that the original finish might be beneath the added coat and got really lucky when it turned out to be a simple water-based emulsion which washed off, revealing the original decals in great order.
It's a great machine from a company with an ultra-short history but a really fascinating one.
It was formed just before the American Civil War and a few machines were made before the company went over to producing uniforms for the Union Army. When this contract ended the plant was sold to an armament manufacturer.
